How To Create An “Angel Wish Card”

Most of you may know by now that I do not have any children of my own, but I have been very lucky and delighted to have 17 god-children the oldest of which is now 22 years old. I guess this is why I am so much of a Christmas person as this holiday holds so very many happy memories for me. Our family always made a point of gathering together at least once per year, sometimes it was for Christmas and other times for a big anniversary or birthday party. I remember my Aunt Letty’s 25th  wedding anniversary, my brother’s 21st birthday party on a lake where we all camped out for a weekend and of course my Ouma’s 80th to name but a few. As we are a very large family we all bring our provisions to wherever we are gathering together and we make every effort to help with making food, filling up glasses, serving snacks and dessert and clearing up afterwards.

As for the logistics my family mostly has small caravans or camper vans, so on Christmas Eve the convoy arrived with at least 8 caravans and 4 campers that were manoeuvred into the back yard and the party began with everyone settling in.

The first task was to put up the large canvas marquee in the garden to protect us from the sun (at Christmas time in Africa it’s the height of summer – and we all love to sit outside and “visit” with each other catching up, telling stories and generally just enjoying being with one another). In 1985 it was our turn to welcome the family and my parents got the biggest tree I had ever seen as we were going to have a house full of children. I was wondering what to do to keep my god-children interested as we decided to let the kids decorate the tree. We had the usual “decs” but I wanted to make the event memorable for them and to remind each of my god-children that they had a guardian angel watching over them. So I decided to show them how to make an Angel wish card.

Firstly I collected together some feathers, white ones are the easiest to find, but you can use coloured feathers for a more vibrant feel, but remember angels don’t usually have hot pink feathers or at least we don’t think so. Take some plain sheets of card in different colours and some pieces of ribbon or coloured string with some glue or sticky tape.

To make this angel feather decoration all you need to do is write out the poem and attach a feather. If you want to make a magnet, just glue on a flat backed magnet to the back of your card. You could also make these with a hanging ribbon to place onto the Christmas tree and you can be as creative as you want…:>)

Angel Wish Card

This is an angel feather,
sent from Heaven above,
to serve as a reminder,
of your angel’s precious love.

It’s from your guardian angel,
that Heaven sent to you,
but it fell out in his task
as he protected you.

Each time you almost stumble,
Each time you nearly fall,
Remember to,
Thank Heaven and the angels,
for answering your call.

(One the reverse write out your Angel Wish that you want your guardian to grant to you)

It was years later when I went to my oldest god-daughter’s wedding that we were deciding what to do for “something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue” the brides tradition, when  Niks went into her wardrobe took out her “Memory Chest” and found out her Angel Wish Card that we had made together all those years ago. She smiled and said “this will do Lee-Lee, my angel will come with me on my special day just as always”

Remember that no matter what your circumstances or where you are in Life you always have an angel watching over you…..
